Nature of Art Camp at Confluence Park

Nature of Art is a camp like no other!

Nature of Art is a weeklong program created and made possible by the San Antonio River Foundation. This art and science-based nature camp is held at Confluence Park where students can learn about nature and science through creative based practices led by local artists, ecologists and educators. The camp is for students ages 7-10 and 11-14.

Each day, students will learn about a different theme tied into the ecosystem of the river, park and the communities that we live in. Much of the day will be spent making artwork that reflects our interest in the natural world. We will use upcycled materials, photography, natural dyes, fabric and paint to learn to look and pay attention to things we may have overlooked before. Students spend time by the river, climbing, jumping, playing and walking outside. Memories and friendships are created through group activities and adventures.

Each day will have a full schedule, with several art projects, river walks and material gathering, lunch, and time to play. On some days we will have environmental or scientific ambassadors come and share their knowledge with us, other days we do yoga or learn photography. Our emphasis is on creating art and building art skills, creating a supportive and kind community, appreciation and stewardship of our San Antonio River, and expressing ourselves while learning by observation and imagination.

A note for parents

  • If you arrive late and we are outside or by the river, you will have to wait with your child until we return to the classroom to sign him/her in.
  • If your child is too tired or ill to participate in the class, we will ask you to pick them up for them to receive the care they need.
  • Please send your child every day, as the projects can be sequential, and if they miss one day, they may be disappointed to find they have missed the beginning of a great project.
  • This is an art camp and art is physical and can be messy. Please send your child in comfortable clothing; preferably play clothes that are not of exceptional value. Please provide comfortable lace-up shoes for walking and climbing.
  • Lunch will not be provided for students. Students are responsible for bringing their own lunch and drinks to camp. There will be access to a water station for refillable bottles.
  • All class supplies will be provided by the camp.
